Our client was facing road tanker costs of £7,500 a day, using our vast experience in chemical treatment biotechnologies, we created an alternative.
Jems were tasked with designing a system alternative to a traditional Lamella settlement plant to remove suspended solids from the drilling/tunnelling wastewater and to neutralise the pH and enable river discharge. The client was looking at a road tanker cost of around £7,500.00 per day for loads removed from site. This could last for 6 – 12 months depending on the speed of their tunnelling process. We used our vast experience in water treatment, specifically chemical treatment, to create an alternative.
As with all of our chemical treatments, we measured and tested the waste water in our mobile lab and found the waste waters produced contained various non-soluble solids, chemical contaminates, and pH 12 at source. Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) levels were up to 9000mg/l and the clarity of waters were as expected, a white emulsion with visible non settling solids.
After various lab tests and trials which included CO2 dosing, we designed a process to pH balance using a bespoke blended organic coagulant/flocculant, utilised Venturi aeration, chemical oxygenation and tertiary 20micron filtration and finally using naturally formed bacteria digestion for COD management in the final unit.
The automation designed into the system made operation of the whole plant simple and non-intrusive for staff. Screens managed the bacterial growth with self-cleaning plates and the chemical levels were managed with up loading reports directly to the approved supplier, meaning stock levels never ran low but avoided over stocking.
Utilising our expertise in chemical wastewater treatment design, and our bespoke chemical blending experience, we were able to neutralise the pH to around 7, and reduce the COD down to <100mg/l, solids to <25mg/l and clarity reading to around 1-2 for turbidity, similar to drinking water quality.
